This light looks like an old fashion oil can/gravy boat. The light could be as simple as you need oil. Check your dipstick oil level. This light looks like a key floating in water. It indicates that your engine is running hot, which is not good. Driving with this light on could be dangerous and fatal to your engine. The causes may be thats its low on coolant. Or may even have radiator,  water pump  or hose issues. Try and beaware of any fluids leaks and the coolor of the liquid. Have it checked out.  

This light looks like an exclamation point inside a circle and parentheses on the outside of the circle. This light could say “ hey you left your parking brake on”. It can also mean you are low on brake fluid, need brake pads, a wheel sensor, or something is wrong with your ABS system. As any light have it looked at so more issues don’t arise.

This little guy actually looks like a battery. Even if your car starts you still need to have this checked out. Tomorrow it may not start at night in the cold and a lot of not nice words appear. This can also give you an indication that there is something wrong with your alternator, wiring or possibly electrical parts. Don’t put it off.

Tire Leaks

Sometimes its not the tire that is leaking air. There are a lot of other reasons. The valve stem could be leaking air. The rim could be corroded. There are even those odd times when the rim has a hole in it. If you’re losing air make sure to have it looked at right away. Driving on a very low tire or flat tire will destroy the tire and will need to be replaced.

Torn wiper blades don’t sound like a big deal but they can be. There are a couple of different things that are annoying and can cause damage. First it is a pain in the butt when you turn on your wiper blades when it’s raining and you can see. Or how about the streaking across your line of vision? If you really let the wiper blades go they can get torn. This can scratch your windshield. It’s an easy fix. Talk to your mechanic and ask them if you need wiper blades or you can stop in and see us.

Do you have a newer car? If so please look and make sure you have a spare tire. The newer cars do not come with one. Instead they come with an air pump, which doesn’t help when there’s a puncture. This I found out the hard way. Jourdan had a flat tire and we are just so used to new cars having a spare guess what?? No they dont. So take the time to look because no one wants to be stranded. Airbags are so important for your safety. When involved in an accident the airbags are deployed with great force and speed. There are senses all over your vehicle. What is a Tie Rod End?

There are inner tie rods and outer tie rods. The outer tie rod connects to the steering knuckle which connects to the tire. The inner tie rod connects from the outer tie rod to the steering rack.

When you make a turn the steering rack slides. Then the tie rods turn the steering knuckles that are attached to the tires in the right direction.

When a cv axle goes bad you could hear a clicking noise when you make a hard turn. If the noise comes from the front it could be the front axles. The same applies to the rear. There’s no preventive maintenance that can be performed to make axles last longer. They should be inspected at your oil change intervals to make sure nothing is torn or leaking. Brake lines look like long thin tubes that run the length of the vehicle and stop at each of the brakes. What happens is there is the brake fluid is stored in the master cylinder. When you push on the pedal it creates pressure on the fluid. The master cylinder pushes the fluid to the brakes calipers through the brakes lines. It is important to have your brake lines looked at. In our area with the salt air and the salt that is put on the roads during the winter causes rust on the brake lines. What happens when there’s a bubble in my tire? That means your tire is pregnant. Not really but something has pinched the rubber and makes the tire produce a bubble. This pinching has caused the rubber to become very thin. The tire needs to be replaced and can not be repaired. If this is not replaced it could cause a blowout. So have your tires checked regularly.

What happens to my car when there’s no brake fluid? Your brakes won’t work. What happens is the brake fluid runs through the brake lines under your car to each wheel. Stepping on your brakes triggers the master cylinder. From there the master cylinder pushes brake fluid to each of your brakes. The fluid then pushes against your pads and causes you to stop. When you push on your pedal and it goes closer to the floor or the pedal kicks back at you have your brakes checked. #ryansservicenter

… What happens when my car runs out of oil. The engine oil is what makes the engine parts inside move against each other and keep cool. . Without the oil the metal parts would grind on each other causing the metal to break down. When you run out of oil the engine starts to grind and will stop moving or seize up.  It is very important to get your vehicle’s oil changed every 3 to 6 months or how often you drive your car. After new tires, it’s always recommended that you get an alignment done. The alignment is what it says. It aligns the vehicle suspension to the ground. That way you have a smoother ride. So if some part of your suspension is off your tires do not touch the ground. Which is causing uneven wear. That means you wouldn’t get the entire life out of your tires. Why is my Air Conditioning Blowing Warm?

Reasons why your Air Conditioning is not cold enough is your air conditioning system uses refrigerant to create cold air. There may not be enough refrigerant in your system. There can be pinholes and leaks that allow the refrigerant to escape. Rubber Hoses can fall apart inside causing the pieces to can get stuck in the Filters and other parts. Which stops proper circulation. This can also cause your Compressor to freeze up.Sometimes a worn belt causes slippage and also adds to the problem. If your air conditioning isn’t working properly make an appointment and let our ASE technicians take a look.

What happens when your car runs out of gas? It may sputter, have power surges, and could even backfire. After that, the engine will shut off and you will lose power to your brakes and steering. If that happens be aware you can still control it but will have to use a lot more muscle power than you are used to. The other reason why you do not want to run out of gas in the bottom of your gas tank.  The tank has all the contaminants from all the previous years of driving. The fuel filter does filter most of this out. But the little bitty pieces can get through and lodge into your fuel pump or fuel injectors. Also keeping gas in the tank keeps your fuel pump cooler and longer-lasting. So make sure you fill-up. #ryansservicenter

If your vehicle’s Air conditioning isn’t blowing air, there are a few things that can cause it.

• The Air Conditioning may need recharging.
• There may be a leak in the refrigerant. Unfortunately, you cant see this leak. The refrigerant disappears as it hits the air. We add a special dye to the system that helps find the leak.
• The cooling fan isn’t working. This is very important because it also helps keep your engine cool as well.
• The Condensor is blocked.

What does the tag on my door mean? There are 2 different tags on the inside of your door. The tire and loading information helps you with tire information. It will tell you the tire size needed for your car. It will tell you the tire pressure for your tires. It looks like this 32PSI.  PSI means pressure per square inch. This means your tire pressure should be at 32. If you have a spare tire it will give you the tire size as well as the tire pressure.

The serpentine belt gets powered by the engine as it turns. The belt runs your alternator, air conditioning, and power steering pump. On certain vehicles, it also runs the water pump, radiator fan, and power brakes.

If the serpentine belt breaks your battery won’t last. The car can not run on the battery. If this happens the engine could overheat before the battery dies. Your steering and braking could also be affected.

Checking for belt cracks no longer applies to newer belts, it depends on the belt thickness. We have new tools to measure the depth of the belt.

The BATTERY stores enough power to turn over your motor and makes you move. But that is about it, you can go a couple of miles on the battery. The ALTERNATOR produces enough power to run your motor. ALTERNATORS  need to re-energize your battery. When the ALTERNATOR  isn’t working there’s not enough power for everything to run. ALTERNATORS  get exhausted. They are turned by the SERPENTINE BELT and spin 2 to 3 times faster than the ENGINE. If you are having issues getting the ALTERNATOR checked so you don’t get stranded.

Let’s address a maintenance item for preventing your vehicle from suffering severe engine damage – timing belt replacement.

Your timing belt, though seeming so insignificant, choreographs the timing of your combustion process. Meaning, it is what controls your pistons and when they travel up and down in the cylinder. Also, making sure the intake valves open at the right time to let in air and fuel, and that they close at the right time to allow the fuel to burn and then the exhaust valves open at the right time to let out the exhaust.

All this happens thousands of times a minute and it’s your timing belt that makes sure the valves are opening and closing at precisely the right time. If the timing is off, your vehicle engine won’t run. And that’s the best case.

The worst case for any driver is that a valve is opening at the wrong time and collides with the piston. The result is bent valves and maybe even more damage to the cylinder head. Repairs can run several thousand dollars.

Now, timing belts just wear out naturally so you want to replace a worn belt before it slips or breaks. Check your owner’s manual or with your friendly and knowledgeable pros at Ryan’s Servicenter to see when they recommend you replace the timing belt. If you’ve never replaced your timing belt and have had your vehicle for a while, talk with your service advisor right away to see if you’re due.

On some engines, the water pump is driven by the timing belt as opposed to the serpentine belt. If that’s the case, it’s a good idea to replace the water pump when you’re replacing the timing belt, and vice versa since much of the same work has to be done for either. The same is true for the timing belt tensioner – it should be inspected and possibly replaced.

Now, replacing a timing belt is one of the more expensive routine maintenance items on service schedules. But not replacing your timing belt can lead to some of the most repairs you’re likely to ever have.

You wouldn’t walk into a different dentist’s office every time you needed a tooth looked at. You wouldn’t pick out someone at random every time you needed your hair cut. And on tax day? You probably wouldn’t trust your taxes to a stranger.

When your check engine light comes on, you may be torn between utter panic and just wanting to ignore it and hope it goes away. That’s perfectly understandable. That same check engine light could come on for anything from a serious engine or transmission problem all the way down to a loose gas cap.

There’s a very common misconception that the trouble codes stored in your engine computer when your check engine light comes on will specifically identify a problem. It’s really more like pointing to the symptoms of a problem.

Think of taking your temperature. Say it’s 101. Your heat sensor – the thermometer – tells you that your temperature is out of the normal range. But it doesn’t tell you why you have a fever. Is it the flu or a sinus infection? You need more information; more tests.

For any given trouble code, there could be a number of causes. So your trained technician takes the trouble code as a starting point and begins a diagnostic process to determine the cause of the problem. And some problems take longer to solve than others.

When your engine management system logs a problem and illuminates the check engine light, this is when a technician will plug in a scanner, download the trouble codes and go to work tracing the cause of the problem.

That’s just the first step. That’s when our technician’s training, equipment, databases and skill get put to work diagnosing the problem and fixing it.

Wiper blades may not be the most exciting topic for most of us,  but they are pretty important. We have all had an experience when a sudden snow or rain storm hits while we’re driving; then when we turn on the wipers – nothing but streaks and bumps . This can be especially bad at night when the glare of on-coming headlights distorts your vision.

Simple answer: change your wiper blades BEFORE they fail. Check them out every couple of months just to see how they are working. Of course, the more you use your wipers, the sooner they’ll wear out. Areas with lots of storms or those who drive a lot in NJ where there are bugs and road grime will use their blades more.

Remember they are exposed to sunlight, ozone, soap, and extreme hot and cold NJ temperatures which lead to deterioration. The blades can just rot away, fall apart, rip or tare before you think you need them. If the blades are torn it lead to scratches in your windshield.

There are two elements to the blade. First, the wiper blade itself: Some have a single wiping edge. Others have multiple edges – kind of like a multi-blade razor. The idea is to maximize wiping power during both swipes of the blade.

The other part is the wiper frame. This is the structure that applies pressure on the blade as it passes over the windshield. A conventional frame has four to six contact points on the blade. These apply pressure used to clear water and snow. A beam frame provides uniform pressure along the entire surface of the wiper. Their shape catches the wind passing over the vehicle to provide additional downforce to help get a clean swipe. A hybrid frame has four to six contact points as with a conventional blade, but also incorporates an airfoil to provide additional downforce as with beam blades.

June – Summer Fun/Summer Safety -They provide Summer/Beach/Pool toys/floats and even small wading pools along with all the summer necessities of Sunblock, Insect repellant,  freezer pops etc and even rainy Summer Days activities like small board games, books, puzzles etc.

August – Back2School – Gift card for a backpack given to each child in grades 1 – 8 along with school supplies for every child registered/home schooled grades K-12.  They also provide them with a $10 Shoprite gift card to be used for that 1^st school week jar of PB&J!!

October – Halloween  In addition to the Treat Bag filled with candy and small games, they will go back to providing each family with a small pumpkin.

November/December – Keeping the Promise of Christmas comes early for the LFBKids  They prepare for Christmas all year but go into high gear the day after our Halloween Distribution. They provided every child with a new pair of Pjs and either slippers, boots or sneakers and toys.

What is a stabilizer link?

A stabilizer link is one of the parts that make up the stabilizer bar/sway bar. The stabilizer bar consists of the bar, links, and bushings. The bar is shaped like a “u”.

The bar is attached to the frame of the vehicle with links and bushes. What happens is this system lets the bar flex and in doing so keeps your vehicle on the ground. When you turn your vehicle it creates a force that may create a situation where the vehicle may go up on one side. This system helps to control that.

Driving around town, we’ve all heard a car or truck that needs a new muffler. But there’s more to the exhaust system than just the muffler. The exhaust system has three main functions:

1. To safely get hot exhaust gas from the engine out the tailpipe
2. Treats the exhaust to remove harmful pollutants
3. Muffle the engine noise

Exhaust gas is poisonous; no one wants the exhaust getting into their passenger compartments. For example, carbon monoxide can be deadly. That’s why you should never run your engine in a closed garage. If you have a leak somewhere in the exhaust system, exhaust could get into the passenger cabin and make you sick or even kill you.

The cooling system in an engine has five components: the radiator, the radiator cap, the hoses, the thermostat and the water pump. The water pump is literally the heart of the system. Just as your own heart keeps your blood circulating through your body, the water pump keeps coolant circulating through your engine.

The water pump is driven by a belt, chain or gear and only operates while the engine is running. It has a limited life span and sooner or later will have to be replaced. You can check your owner’s manual to find out how long your water pump should last. Some can fail at only 40,000 miles, but almost all of them fail by 100,000 miles.

Water pumps don’t gradually wear out; they fail. Basically they’re either working or they’re not. A failed water pump has to be replaced.

Water pumps can fail in two ways: they can spring a leak or their bearings fail. Leaks can come from a cracked pump, but usually develop at the gasket where the pump attaches to the engine.

If you hear a low-pitched grinding sound coming from the water pump, it’s time for a new one. If you see coolant leaking in the area near the pump, it needs to be replaced. Also, coolant on the driveway could indicate water pump failure. Many water pumps aren’t visible because they’re under a plastic cover, so you may have to take your vehicle to Ryan’s Servicenter to know if the water pump has failed.

If your water pump is run by the timing belt, then it should be replaced when you replace the belt. Most timing belts need to be replaced at around 60,000 to 90,000 miles. The labor for replacing a timing belt is about 90% the same for replacing a water pump, so it’s cost-effective to take care of them both at the same time.

Also, if your water pump develops a leak (if it’s powered by the timing belt), you have to replace the timing belt as well since contamination by coolant fluid damages the belt. It just makes sense to replace both of these parts whenever either one needs it.
